This was a day that was tinged with sadness as these two teams met for the first time since the tragic events of July last year in Porthleven. The toss was won by St Just and much to the surprise of Porthleven decided to take to the field. To say the going was slow at the start of the innings would be an understatement. St Just's bowlers were keeping to a tight line and not giving anything away. Ronnie Williams was the first to go in the 13th over with only 16 on the board, playing down the wrong line. He was quickly followed by Jef Carvelly who was unlucky to see the ball trickle on to his stumps and slowly topple the bails, 18-2 off 16 overs, the going was slow to say the least!! Dean Bray and JJ Walker were now at the crease and although they were struggling to get runs, they were occupying the crease - quite fortunately at times too!! JJ was next to go as the lack of runs and pressure of the accurate bowling started to take it's toll, he edged behind and was smartly taken by keeper Bob Jose. Dean followed him the next over dismissed by a brilliant catch in the covers, 54-4 off 30. Andy Bonnett and Neil Bartlett were now at the crease and managed to increase the run rate as the close of the innings approached. Neil went for 12 at Long On as he consistently tried to put the ball out of the ground, he was followed by Adam Young who added a handy 15 before being yorked. Brad Bury came to the crease and showed a bit of class making sure he scored from each delivery he faced. Bonnett was dismissed in the final over going for runs, and the innings was closed by a Chris Higgs scoring two runs. A very small total on what seemed like a good pitch before the game started, but the team were still very upbeat.
The visitors took to the field with a good deal of confidence to achieving their goal. The going seemed to be fairly tough for the home side too as openers Carvelly and Young tried in vain to take a wicket. Stand In skipper Dean (Inzy) Bray decided to make a change and this paid dividends as Bury took a wicket in his first over- Andrew Osborne taking a howling mad catch at Mid On, 25-1 off 9 overs. The runs were trickling through as the overs ticked by, chances of catches were offered but not taken. In the 19th over skipper Bray injured his shoulder as he dived to stop the ball, unfortunately he could not carry on and had to be replaced with a sub fielder from the opposition. JJJ came on to bowl as the conditions of play started to worsen, and for once it was not "red mist" that clouded the field for him. He took a wicket in his 3rd over and in tandem with Bury the run rate had slowed slightly, but the chances were still not sticking in the hands! For St Just, Rowe was scoring all the runs, and he should have stopped to buy a lottery ticket as he was dropped 6 times throughout his innings. His was the vital wicket that Port desired as they were able to take wickets at the other end. Port were still very confident of a win as the mist came down, and so did the wickets along with the runs required. The sub fielder made a difference too, actually running out his team mate (for some reason he did not really want to celebrate with his new "team mates"). The home team reached their target with 6 wickets down and 10 overs to spare.
Porthleven were left to reflect on a day that they simply did not have enough runs on the board (not to take anything away from the excellent bowling of St Just). The saying "Catches wins matches" springs to mind, and when you drop 8 in a day, then you know something is not right!! Port must gather themselves quickly as they have an Andrew Cup game at home on Wednesday against St Ives, followed by a home game against Goldsithney on Saturday. All support is most welcome for all matches.
The 2nd XI faired no better at home, beaten well by Leedstown 2nd XI. Batting first the visitors scored 200 in 45 overs with Robinson falling just short of his half century on 48. Phil Harding was the pick of the Port bowlers taking 3 wickets for 29 runs in his 12 overs. In reply Port never really got out of the blocks, losing wickets regularly, only Colin Lee had an answer as he fired a quick fire 38. The innings was closed when Liam Chapman was caught and unfortunately the home side fell 88 runs short of the required target. The 2nd XI will face Ludgvan 2nd XI away next Saturday.
