The final game of the season and the weather was as typical as it has been all 'summer'. Winning the toss (again!) Parish invited Hayle to bat and they moved into the 40s without any alarm, carefully seeing off the opening spells of the chunky Australian and chatty South African, Young and Carvelly.
The introduction of Al 'Tino' John worked as he bowled Cook for 24, spin king 'Halle' Bury twirling away at the other end bowling some unplayable deliveries, quickly removing Stuckey and the dangerous Neil Trestrail for a duck.
The rate slowed and the pair bowled unchanged, Tino grabbing his second, Bury his third before it was left to Carvelly and Young to come back, grab themselves some wickets and take the bowling cup to the wire! Adam Young the winner by one wicket, Dave 'Mallard' Goodchild's safe hands to thank!
With the smell of cheap wickets in the air the skipper thought he'd join the show and the innings was ended an over early.
After a 'cracking' tea, substitute keeper Jamie Strachan strode to the crease........promptly striding back after not troubling the scorers. James 'Gems' Roper next to depart with the score 4-2. Carvelly's never one to hold back and his way to relieve the pressure was to take the attack to Hayle, one particular 6 is still rising! It was not to be his day though, and after departing for 19, Young joined 'Champagne' Paddy Gardner and the pair amassed their partnership in ones and two's and the Hayle heads dropped.
By the time young Patrick was removed for a Gower-esque 26, he and Young had the target in sight, and despite losing Kev 'Sick note' Pawley and Young himself, Parish and Goodchild eventually saw the Roasters home, Parish needing Bury as a runner - tiring work out there!
And so the end of a disappointing season in many ways. A lack of players available for crucial games, a long term injury to inspirational Irishman JJ Walker, and 6 games lost to the weather left a lot of players with one eye on the football season or putting their feet up!
Those who did turn up worked hard, thanks to all players, especially the 2nd XI ones who helped out so regularly, and of course our star supporter Brian Worden, who turned up to every game!
Thanks for watching, supporting and sponsoring us this year, we have a 6 a side tournament on Sunday 14th September in aid of the British Heart Foundation, and a big 'well done' the those who took part in the 'Bellies & Beards'!
Have a good winter!
