Outgoing Batsman

Like this report, this cricket match did not take long to finish. A dominant and professional win for the Roasters to maintain their good recent run of form. Missing JJ Walker through a season long injury, Twiggy Thomas through football, DCI Higgs away undercover, and Welterweight skipper Darren Parish (who is away scouting for more players halfway across the world), it was left to elder Italian brother Dean Bray, to marshal the troops. The first task to win the toss, was a success – this turning out to be a decisive factor in the game. After rain overnight, on a damp wicket, Mount Hawke were put in to bat.

The new ball partnership of Cif Carvelly and everyone’s favourite Australian, Adam Young did the business. Young was in top form, with varying line, length, and speed causing all sorts of problems. First to go, Dunstan caught by ‘war veteran’ Nigel Dunstan in the gully off Young for 0. Next to come on, I Lean was quickly sent packing by Carvelly, expertly caught and bowled for 1. The dangerous James Mann was next to go, Young offering him a full toss, which he turned down, only to leave his wood shattered, bowled for 4. With the score now at 5 for 3 off 4 overs, the Roasters continued to push. DJ Jaffa Bartlett, then took a top catch coming over his shoulder, again off Young, to get rid of Atkinson for 0. A mini partnership then developed, but the Roasters stayed patient, and kept on it, eventually removing Cloke, who had twice been dropped, for a defiant 21 – Young getting him caught behind by the rotund Ronnie Williams. The plucky Hawkes then had a mad 5 minutes – culminating in 2 run outs. The first, trying to run a single to Dunstan, proved to be a big mistake – an expert with balls in hand, Nigel accurately threw to Williams who promptly removed the bails. The batsmen Madely, clearly not happy he didn’t ground his bat in time, gone for 12. What a bizarre run out the next was – Ronnie Williams with an attempted run out failed – as the batsmen was in. Ronnie then attempted to throw the ball to the other end failed as it hit the batsmen instead. The batsmen decided there was still a run there (which there wasn’t) – leaving the crafty Williams to remove the stump from the ground and claim another scalp. Thankfully from this The Hawkes tail did not wag. Bradley ‘Logan’ Bury came on for a brief cameo, having Sims caught by Truronian’s finest, Dave Goodchild, at second slip. Young then claimed his 5-for – having Peters caught well by debutant 16 year old Olly Williams at mid off. It was good to see the fiery, Strawberry blonde Australian back to his best. It was Olly Williams then who finished the job clean bowling Bray for 0. Mount Hawke all out for a miserly 46, the Roasters licking their lips at the prospect of an early start in the local public houses.

The job wasn’t done though – and to achieve maximum points they could only afford to lose 2 wickets but no more than that. With that in mind, the opening partnership of Williams and Bray, was patient but deliberate – trying to ensure that no one else had to bat and have the pressure on them. Both batsmen hit boundaries. Williams hitting a six! A phenomenal effort with his 9 stone frame, as well some fluent drives. The run rate ticked over, and despite some near misses, the pair guided the team home with a partnership of 51. Williams hitting the winning runs, ending up with 28 not out (with 3 fours and 1 six). Bray, now without terrorist looking beard, supporting with 21 not out (with 4 fours).

Overall, a top performance from everyone – a superb effort from all bowlers, back up by good fielding, followed by a sensible batting reply. Another 20 points pushing the Roasters up to 4th in the table, still with a chance of promotion. With Parish still away next Saturday, Porthleven travel to Goldsithney hoping to avenge the loss at home to them earlier in the season.
