A thrilling game, played in the right spirit throughout saw the Roasters come out on top, snatching a tight 3 wicket win before painting the town, and Big T's red. Or was it yellow?! Perhaps the most surprising event of the day took place before a ball was bowled, with the skipper, usually renowned as a useless tosser, winning his 4th spin on the bounce, and inserting the visitors on a grassy track, albeit under cloudless skies. The decision looked a good one, when in the 8th over Adam 'Oz' Young, bowling in white Bermuda shorts, deceived Kevin Bosustow with a slower ball, an 'agricultural' chip to Parish at mid on saw him depart with just 19 on the board. Young had deceived Dale time and time again, and the introduction of 'upside down head' Wristy Francis into 2nd slip paid dividends when Dale's 32 ball innings ended for just a single, followed in the next over by Trevor Lee, finding Dunstan, one of the gulleys, departing for a duck, Cif Carvelly the dominant force. Penetration proved difficult from both ends, Pearson and Gray were difficult to move, but they in turn found scoring difficult, Dunstan back from his tour rep job in Afghanistan, skipped in to bowl his 6 overs, only falling flat on his pretty face three times, 'Fiddy' Higgs and Parish tried from the same end before eventually, in his 11th over, 'Halle' Bury finally made the breakthrough, Higgs catching Pearson for 20, ending an 84 run partnership. As often happens Gray followed, playing on for 45. Gilman and Hall added useful knocks of 24 and 16, but Young returned to pick up his usual couple of 'rabbits', the innings ending at 165-9.
Port's reply was slow and deliberate, and with just 12 on the board Mullion's tight bowling got its reward, porky opener Ron'nay' Williams caught behind off the bowling of Tony Matthews for 2 less than last week! 'Twiggy' Thomas and eldest Bray brother, Dean took the score to 33 when, just as getting into his stride, Bray was well caught by Dan Gilman for 18, off the bowling of Tom Retallack. Twiggy was next to go, his eyes lighting up at Bosustow's inviting balls, chipping to Gray on the line to depart for 16. With the score on 62 Carvelly presented Gilman with a tricky caught and bowled chance, eagerly taken, then followed by Neil 'Jaffa' Bartlett, smashing Bosustow to 'cow corner', Gray not having to move an inch to take the catch.
21 overs gone, 62-5, it didn't look good for Roasters fans, but war 'vet' Dunstan joined everyone's favourite vegetarian Adam Young, as the pair put together a well thought out partnership, running every available single before 'Henman' drove straight to Gilman, who at this stage could do no wrong, his 42 ball innings ending for 23, 58 runs the partnership. "Ello! Ello! Ello!" was the cry from the pavilion as DCI Higgs strode to the crease, finding use for the youth kit in the dressing room, the pint sized PC smashed a huge 6, relieving the pressure at just the right time, but as usual Young had to be involved in a run out! Higgs played the ball to his own feet, Young called 'yes' (I'm not actually sure he knows there's another one he could use!) and Higgs looked on in disbelief as he was joined by a scampering bag of Australian bones, 143-7 after 43 overs. Up to this point the pressure had built and built, but no-one seemed to have to Bradley 'Baileys' this as he came in to face Danny Gilman, brought back after bowling his first 8 overs for 17, his 9th was hit by Bury for 3, then a single from Oz, then a 4 from Bury, a dot, and then 2 huge 6's out of the ground to take the score to163. By the time Gilman's next over started the scores were level, so Bury just smacked the first ball for 4, giving him 23 from 7 balls and 19 points for the Roasters. A hard fought thriller!
