Summer arrived and so did the fixture Porthleven always seem to want to win most. Never much love lost between these sides over the years, and Port have had the best of them over the last few years, today was no exception as some smiles were wiped off faces in style!
Winning the toss for the 3rd time in a row, Parish decided to have first use of conditions, a decision not shared by 10 stone 7 pound opener, Ronnie Williams, bowled for just a single. 'Les' Dawson joined furry Italian Dean Bray, and the pair withstood the usual verbals to take the score to 42 before both were bowled in the space of an over. PC Higgs joined Carvelly, but was 'talked out', Cif joined by Jaffa Bartlett, enabling the uniform loving Higgs time to return to his car and play with his trucheon. Jaffa added a valuable 20 before departing with the score on 107-5, Adam Young then joining Carvelly as the South African began to hit his stride. Young was run out for the second time in a week, 'Halle' Bury then departing with the score 161-7.
A 8th wicket stand of 56 then followed, the highlight of some people's day. The skipper plating a mercurial innings of cunning and patience, oh, and J Carvelly chipped in best part of 50 of those.....! Carvelly reached his ton, dedicating it to his team mates in white. Power strokes all around the pitch saw eight 6's and thirteen 4's in his 90 ball stay before finally removed for 128. A poor, lucky innings as described by some, but they're still looking for the balls now!
With 217 to defend and a chance to return the verbal favours, Adam Young bowled Ivey in his second over for a duck. Rodda, now somewhat subdued next to fall, caught by Big Ron off the Australian. David and Mark Trestrail then put on what they seemed to believe was a match winning partenership, taking the score to 139-2 at drinks. The Roasters had lost none of their fight, and love coming from behind, Dawson brought on to replace the luckless Bury and in his first over Young caught David Trestrail for 77. Young then returned to bowl himself, getting immediate reward, Trestrail getting wood, Bray taking him from behind the sticks for 50.
With 2 new batsmen at the crease Dawson was 'rested' after his single over, Carvelly returning with dramatic effect, his first ball too quick for Paull, bails sent flying. Curnow was next to go, frustrated by Young and Cif he decided to take on the Durban Destroyer's bouncer, presenting a simple catch to Higgs. Simon and Colin Trestrail frustrated for a while but after Dawson was given his usual 1 over spell, Higgs was thrown the cherry, and he grasped his chance, his first over enticing Colin to cut straight to Williams, 162-7, Simon following, bowled by Higgs for 9, 171-8.
'Monty' Bury returned and snared Stephens, Williams with his catching hands on this week and it was left to Inspector Higgs to help Hollow's stumps 'fall down the stairs', Barripper all out for 185 and victory by 32 runs and 20 points. Amazing what getting a few players back does!
