On a day that threatened showers, the sun eventually shone and the game was played in virtually cloudless skies, a determined performance bringing a well deserved victory. Asked to bat, the Roasters suffered a blow when 'Boo Boo' Bonnett went for 5 when he chipped a simple return catch to Smith with the score on 24. Porky opener, Ronnie Williams played some great drives and was just settling into the groove when he was caught for a well stroked 24. JJ Walker's lucky charms were left behind as he was well caught for 7, and 'Jaffa' Bartlett failed to trouble the scorers, 54-4 in the 16th over. Rowdy South African, Cif Carvelly smashed 6 fours in his 22 ball 28 before he was next to go, playing on for 28. At 76-5 the Roasters appeared in trouble but 'DCI' Chris Higgs played as if it was his trusty truncheon in his hand as he tore into the 'Hawkes' attack, ably assisted by Adam 'Oz' Young. The pair were together for just 14 overs, but put on a vital 73 runs before, just one short of his 50, 'The Inspector' found his sticks rearranged. Jamie 'Squirrel' Slater was next to go, luckily the 'gift' he'd left in the changing room, 'upsetting' the stomach of the Australian, was now forgotten, and the ginger bunny hunter held the tail together long enough to post a very good score on a tricky wicket.
Carvelly roared in, the 2nd ball of the innings enticing Chynoweth to present the simplest of catches that even Parish's meringue fingers couldn't drop! Unsurprisingly he couldn't remove Cloke, that was left to the wiry Australian, taking a fine caught and bowled chance. 10-2. Prince and Bryant then occupied the next 17 overs, very few attacking strokes, but the Irish spud collector enticed Bryant to tickle behind, a chance Williams wasn't going to pass up. Next came the catch of the season. All votes are off now, this one won't be beaten! Paul Francis, 'The Bearded Wrist', was at long off, some 10 yards in when Prince drove Walker back in that direction. The Wrist, realising he was too far in began the familiar stumble backwards every fielder dreads, then realising the ball was sailing over and behind him, threw out a wrist, dived backwards and the ball stuck in his sticky paw! From here though, the home side dug in, Parish struggled to control his length, but as Bradley Bury was on 'just-in-case' maternity leave, had to bowl his 12 over unbroken spell. Luckily though, Young and Carvelly came back to feast on the tail. Both of them fired up, they relentlessly pounded away at both ends, Young taking 5-16 in his 2nd spell, Carvelly simply too quick for the batsmen to touch, as Neil ' Jaffa' Bartlett took his 2nd catch of the innings to wrap the victory up in the 42nd over. Another fine performance in the field, with all the chances taken, and only 2 extras conceded.
