Porthleven's 1st XI played their first match at home on a wet pitch on a warm afternoon. Stand-in Skipper JJ Walker faired no better than the regular chap and loss the toss - so a bat it was on what looked like a low slow damp one!! Things got off to a flyer as Ronnie (3 stone wet through) Williams slapped the first two balls for boundaries. After that proceedings turned towards the favour of the visitors, with a regular procession of batsmen out to the middle, turn on their heels and trudge back to the pavilion - heads bowed!! At 27-4 from 11 overs the outlook was bleak. Only Ronnie seemed to be able to cope with the conditions, until the 20th over when he was stumped trying to up the scoring. Partnerships were hard to come by and the bowling was tight adding to the frustration of the Fishermen. Bradley Bury took to the pitch and seemed to like the conditions, obviously relishing the thought of Bowling later. Nigel Dunstan looked in good form with the bat stroking the ball to the off side boundary nicely. His downfall was a stange one, Bradley chipping the ball back to the bowler from a full toss but was dropped - and the ball then ran on to topple the bails, Nigel stared on placidly until given Run Out by the Umpire before trying to run his wood home. But for a short stay by Dave Goodchild at the crease it was all over, Port had been rumbled for 96 off only 35 overs.

Due to the time and the length of the Home teams innings, it was a straight turn around for the teams and Port took to the task of defending the small total with zest. Cif Carvelly and Dunstan started their spells well, Nigel being denied by a knick that wasn't heard by the Umpire (everyone else was deafened), the batsmen legs were still at that point for once that over!!! He was rewarded just before tea with a deserved Leg before, Port were on their way and tea was taken in a jolly mood. After tea it was back to the task in hand, and Port didn't disappoint the crowd. Opener Stuckey was in belligerent mood at one end, but Nige and Cif were replaced by Bradley and JJ, and the pair got stuck right in bowling extremely tight spells and wickets started to fall. Hayle found it very difficult to score any runs during this period and hence the pressure was building - this forced the visiting batsmen started to play shots that were just not required. Oz Young was brought in to the attack and made a great start with a maiden and followed that up with the break through that got the team out of jail. The fielding was outstanding throughout the innings, and all chances in the air were snapped up by the hungry fielders (nothing to do with tea - or the charity fasting going on around the club). Hayle started to chip away at the required runs and things started to get a little tense around the ground. The target was reduced to 13 runs with 1 wicket remaining and 11 overs left to get them. Instead of bringing back pace to scare the last two batsmen off the pitch the Skipper brought himself back and promptly knocked the Off Peg out of the ground to send the team in to feverish celebrations and the crowd marvelling at a fantastic comeback by the Home team. This was a display that showed great tenacity from all the players that took to the field and they deserved every point that they earned.

Port's 2nd XI produced another stunning win away at St Just. Set a target of 227 to win they set about the task eagerly. Colin Lee and Phil Harding both blasting quick fire scores of 71 and 63 respectively. This set Port on their way to a fantastic 7 wicket victory to avenge last years tie at the same venue.

So a cracking weekend for the lads of both teams. Don't forget to seek out the guys as you see them around town to Sponsor them in the "Beards and Bellies" fund raiser in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
